5 Warning Signs Your Brakes Need Attention

1. Squealing or squeaking when you brake

That high-pitched noise is often your brake pads telling you they are getting low. Most pads have a small metal wear indicator built in that makes that sound on purpose. If you hear it regularly, it is time to have someone take a look.

2. Grinding or growling

If squealing has turned into a grinding or growling sound, the pads may be worn all the way down and metal is contacting metal. This can damage your rotors and usually means the repair has gotten more involved. Do not wait on this one.

3. The brake pedal feels soft or spongy

Your pedal should feel firm and responsive. If it sinks further toward the floor than it used to, or feels mushy when you press it, there may be an issue with your brake fluid or brake lines. This is worth checking right away.

4. The vehicle pulls to one side when braking

If your car drifts left or right when you apply the brakes, it could point to uneven brake wear, a stuck caliper, or a problem with the brake fluid. Either way, pulling during braking deserves a proper inspection.

5. Vibration or pulsing through the pedal

A pedal that vibrates or pulses under your foot often means the rotors are warped. This can happen from heavy or repeated braking over time. You may also feel it through the steering wheel during stops.
